Children of Immigrants Data Tool
The Urban Institute Children of Immigrants Data Tool enables you to generate charts on the characteristics of children, age 0 to 17, for the United States and for the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Data come from the 2005 and 2006 American Community Survey.
With the Data Tool, you can compare populations of children defined by the nativity and citizenship of the child or their parents. For example, you can look at data for children with immigrant parents or citizen children with noncitizen parents across a rich array of statistics.
The available data include
- child characteristics (e.g., child's school enrollment),
- parent characteristics (e.g., English proficiency of parents), and
- family characteristics (e.g., family poverty)
Your customized chart can present either the number of children or the share (percentage) of children with a given characteristic. Children in low-income working families—the focus of the Urban Institute's Low-Income Working Families Project—are highlighted as a separate population group.

- More on the data and definitions can be found in the technical appendix.
- You may select as many states as needed.
- You may select up to three populations.
- You may select up to eight statistics.
- Statistics can be obtained for available population groups on the "Select Populations" page. The "Select Statistics" page shows the list of statistics available on the population groups. These statistics include child characteristics (e.g., English proficient), parent characteristics (e.g., U.S. citizen parents), and family characteristics (e.g., one-parent family).
Some terms (e.g., Asian) are available as both population groups and statistics. Other "Select Statistics" terms (e.g., one-parent family) are currently unavailable as population groups, and data about them cannot be obtained using the Data Tool.
